Pati Fontes Sets Her Hooks at True Believer Jiu Jitsu

We were lucky enough to welcome multiple-time IBJJF world champion Pati Fontes back to the mats at True Believer Jiu Jitsu for a second visit in late March.

After her previous trip to Pittsburgh last September, Fontes promised to return to True Believer Jiu Jitsu — and she quickly made good on that promise. On March 31, 2019, she hosted an afternoon workshop and training session focused primarily on using hooks to sweep opponents.

During the session, we worked three different variations of sweeps that rely on butterfly hooks and removing your sparring partner’s posts, helping students end up safely on top and immediately ready to pass. After drilling, Fontes took time to answer questions and help supplement the technique. The session concluded with Fontes running a king-of-the-hill style open mat to provide students with a high-intensity, live scenario to practice the techniques.

Currently residing in Long Beach, California, Fontes is originally from Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and she has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since she was 15 years old. She is the third-ranked no-gi female black belt in the world, and she competes frequently in both gi and no-gi formats, most recently at Fight 2 Win 108 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, marking the fifth time she has been selected to fight in one of the franchise’s grappling events.

You can see footage from her previous visit to True Believer Jiu Jitsu in the video below, when she hosted a no-gi session for all students, and a seminar exclusively for women.
